A QUICK INTRODUCTION

What is radon,
anyway?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can move from the ground into a home. You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it.

Long-term exposure can increase the risk of lung cancer. Testing is how you find out your home’s level. If it’s elevated, there are proven ways to reduce it.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Let’s clear
a few things up.

Less jargon.
More useful answers.

Does my home need a test?+

The EPA recommends testing homes for radon. A neighbor’s result, the age of your home, or whether you have a basement won’t tell you your own radon level. Testing your home is the way to know.

How long does testing take?+

Short-term tests run for at least 48 hours; some methods require longer. Time is also needed for setup, collection, and reporting. Share any inspection deadline before choosing a test date.

How do I prepare my home?+

For a short test, closed-house conditions usually start at least 12 hours before testing and continue throughout. Keep windows closed; normal entry and exit are fine. Your tester should provide instructions for your equipment, ventilation, weather, and test method.

What if the result is elevated?+

The EPA recommends fixing homes with radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L and considering action between 2 and 4 pCi/L. Follow-up testing may be appropriate depending on the initial test. A qualified radon professional can explain mitigation options.

Does a low result mean there’s no risk?+

No. The EPA says no radon level is known to be risk-free. Radon levels can change over time and with how a home is used. A result describes the test conditions and period measured.

Can I use a home test kit instead?+

Yes. The EPA provides guidance on both do-it-yourself kits and professional testing. For a real estate transaction, check the test method and timing with the parties involved before you start.

Where do you work, and what does it cost?+

Radon testing starts at $299 for one testing location in a single residence. We serve San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano counties. Additional testing locations or unusual property requirements are quoted before booking. Any travel charge is confirmed with the total.
